Nampa, Idaho, is located in the Boise metro area and has nearly 100,000 people. Over the years, the city has grown to attract both more residents and businesses. The location near Boise and in the middle of vast vineyards and wineries has made the city a popular place.

The History of a Town Built on a Railroad

Nampa's history goes back to the 1880s when a Union Pacific subsidiary started building railroad tracks to the west. In 1883, the Oregon Short Line Railway subsidiary endeavored to construct rails from Granger, Wyoming to Huntington, Oregon. The railways would now give travelers from the east a much safer way to get out to the country's far western part.

Once the tracks were in place, different towns started popping up about every 10 to 15 miles on the railway. Nampa was one of these several towns that served as railroad stops. To this day, nobody can be sure how the city got its name, but it was well-known that many of the towns along the Oregon Short Line were given peculiar names. 

Some historians think that the name may have come from the Native American word "namb," which means "moccasins" or "footprints." The native people of the region were known to fill their moccasins with sagebrush during the cold winters, making their footprints larger than usual. 

In 1885, Alexander and Hannah Duffes homesteaded on a 160-acre plot of land east of Caldwell to turn the land into a town. In 1886, Duffes, with help from his friend James McGee formed the Nampa Land and Improvement Company and divided the land into multiple lots. Since Duffes was a very religious man, he originally wanted a town that had no saloons. In the early days, Duffes refused to sell lots to anyone who wished to build a tavern on the property. In 1888, a local newspaper cited that the town had 28 businesses, including three saloons.
